University 一般会提供本科和研究生课程，有更大的学生群体能获得高级学位，它包含college，比如一个综合性的大学，有各种不同的学院；不过有时候一些 college 可能比 university 还大，也会提供硕士学位。
更复杂的是，一些符合 university 标准的高校也许会选择自称为 college，因为有些高校一开始是 college，后来发展成 university，但仍保留原来的名字。有些人认为 university 比 college 好，其实不然，有些 college 比 university 更难申请。
